CASTLE IN THE CLOUDS,
1914 MOUNTAINTOP MANSION IDEAL
ANTIQUE SHOW SITE
The Castle in the Clouds will host on June 28th another exciting Nan Gurley show, attracting dealers from near and far, drawn to the spectacular site which has nearly 40,000 visitors each year. The show takes place in a beautiful mountain meadow below the Castle and with views of Lake Winnipesaukee. This unique property, open to the public since 1959, offers much to see and do beyond enjoying the Arts and Crafts mansion and its amazing panorama.
Forty-five miles of trails cover the surrounding 5,500 wilderness acres, with the Brook Walk being one of the easiest and most beautiful as it follows a series of waterfalls in Shannon Brook as it cascades down the mountain. The Castle Café, now entering its third season, has gained a reputation for great food and the best view in the Lakes Region. Next to the Café is the Art Gallery which will be featuring at the time of the Nan Gurley show an exhibition entitled "Fantasy Explored with Puppets, Masks, and Mime" presented by a talented local artist. The surrounding Lakes Region area is a well known tourist/second home mecca attracting vacationers with the beauty of its countryside and many amenities.
The Castle itself, known as "Lucknow" when it was built in 1914 by rages-to-riches shoe industrialist Thomas Plant, is a splendid statement of its era, incorporating every known modern convenience while simultaneously embracing the Arts and Crafts aesthetic which extolled nature and hand craftsmanship. The result is a sophisticated and subtle statement of wealth, a beautiful building designed to blend perfectly with its surrounding landscape and sited to command an amazing view. The mansion showcases custom work of the best artisans of the era: Edward F. Caldwell lighting, William Jackson ironwork, Irving-Casson/A.H. Davenport paneling and custom furniture, Tiffany Studios glass decoration. The mansion was never modernized and so it has kept a highly unusual degree of integrity, retaining most of its original furnishings and systems, and, extraordinarily, its original setting uncompromised.
The Castle in the Clouds is owned by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust who will protect the land in perpetuity. The Castle is managed by the Castle Preservation Society whose mission is to preserve and interpret the Castle, aiming to restore it to its former glory by its 100th anniversary in 2014, and to make the facility an educational/cultural public resource. Both entities are 501(c) 3 non-profit organizations. All gate proceeds from the Nan Gurley Antique Show will benefit the Castle Restoration Fund. There is still dealer space available for the show. Interested dealers should call Nan Gurley at 207-625-3577.
